Family Sponsorship Programs

Updated: May 21, 2021

If you are at least 18 years old, a permanent resident of Canada, citizen of Canada or a registered Indian, you can sponsor the following relatives under the Family Sponsorship programs:

Your spouse, Common-law partner or dependent children

  • You don’t have to meet the Low Income Cut-off (LICO) requirement but need to demonstrate your financial ability to support your sponsored spouse, Common-law partner or dependent children

  • If you sponsor a child of your dependent child (your child’s child), you still need to meet LICO for past 12 months.

  • Ensure the sponsored person will not rely on social assistance

  • Processing time is about 12 months (but it’s also case-by-case and varies by country)

Your parents and grandparents

  • You need to meet the Low Income Cut-off (LICO) plus 30% requirement for 3 previous years and demonstrate your financial ability to support your sponsored parents/grandparents and their dependants

  • Ensure the sponsored person will not rely on social assistance

  • Processing time is about 20-24 months (but it’s also case-by-case and varies by country)

Your other relatives (some restrictions applied)

  • You can sponsor an orphaned brother, sister, nephew, niece or grandchild if they are minors, single, orphaned and related to you by blood or adoption

  • You can sponsor ONE relative if you have no Canadian/PR/registered Indian family members and no other eligible family members to sponsor

  • You need to meet the Low Income Cut-off (LICO) requirement for past 12 months and demonstrate your financial ability to support your sponsored relatives and their dependents

  • Ensure the sponsored person will not rely on social assistance

  • Processing time varies case-by-case and varies by country

Your adopted child

  • You must establish a genuine and legal parent-child relationship with your adopted child

  • The adoption must be recognized by the child’s country of origin and the province/territory of residence in Canada

  • You must go through the adoption process and later the sponsorship process

  • Processing time varies case-by-case and varies by country
