Announced by the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) today, accompanying family members of high- and low-skill workers will be eligible for work permits Starting in January 2023. Family members such as spouses, common-aw partners, and working-age dependents of the temporary workers in all skill level jobs will become eligible. Previously, only spouses or common-law partners of workers in high-skill occupations are eligible for an Open work permit.
The newly introduced measure will be in effect in January 2023 and stay in effect for at least 2 years:
"Phase 1 will enable family members of workers coming to Canada through the high-wage stream of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program or the International Mobility Program to apply for an open work permit .
Phase 2 aims to expand the measure to the family members of workers from the low-wage stream of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, following consultations.
Phase 3 will include consultation with agricultural partners and stakeholders to assess operational feasibility for expanding the measure to family members of agricultural workers."
Previously ineligible family members can now benefit from this temporary measure.
